Rhubarb and Blossom

Rhubarb and Blossom are 9-year-old kunekune pigs. The very name of this name breed is translated to ‘Fat and Round’ from the Maori language in New Zealand where the breed originates from. They are indeed large and round… and hairy.

They found their place at the Sanctuary after their original owner was hoodwinked into the ‘micropig’ trend. After very quickly outgrowing their home, their owner did a most admirable thing and sought out a more appropriate accommodation and lifestyle for them. The girls are fans of a spa day where they soak the day away in their mud wallow. Both girls will sit and ‘give trotter’ in the hopes of getting an apple.

Stan and Ollie, two more kunekunes, arrived a few months after the girls. When we met them we were shocked at their enormous size even though we were familiar with the breed. With their original owner suffering from ill health, the boys needed a safe haven. Due to their size, the boys needed a much bigger space and suffered from weakness in the muscles due to not having room to move around at their previous home. This in turn affected their trotters and general health.

Despite Stan and Ollie having enormous, pointy tusks, they are actually the softest, silliest boys and enjoy a good belly rub and cuddle…and apples! We could do with an orchard!
